If you’re wondering what to wear for family photos, you’re definitely not alone.

In fact, it’s probably the number one question I get after a family books their session.

And honestly? I understand why.

Choosing outfits for yourself is one thing. Coordinating outfits for your partner, your kids, and maybe even a baby who has strong opinions about socks can feel like a whole different challenge.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

When clients ask me what to wear for family photos, my advice is always the same: choose outfits that feel comfortable, timeless, and most importantly, like you.

Because at the end of the day, your family’s connection should be the first thing people notice in your photos, not what everyone was wearing.

What to Wear for Family Photos: Start with Soft, Timeless Colors

When it comes to choosing colors, soft neutrals and earthy tones photograph beautifully year after year.

Think warm creams, soft whites, muted blues, sage greens, dusty rose, and rich browns.

These colors create a timeless feel and allow the focus to stay on your family rather than your outfits.

Instead of matching everyone exactly, try coordinating colors that work together naturally.

For example, if Mom is wearing a soft floral dress with hints of blue and green, the rest of the family can pull colors from that palette. The result feels effortless instead of overly planned.

A few other tips:

  • Skip large logos and busy patterns.
  • Mix in textures like linen, knits, or gauzy fabrics.
  • Choose colors that complement each other rather than match perfectly.

Choose Outfits You Can Actually Move In

One of my favorite things about sessions is that we’re rarely standing still.

We’re walking.

We’re snuggling.

We’re playing games.

We’re chasing toddlers who suddenly decide they’re training for a marathon.

That’s why comfort matters.

Flowy dresses, relaxed fits, soft sweaters, and breathable fabrics tend to photograph beautifully because they move naturally and allow you to focus on your family instead of adjusting your clothes every five minutes.

If you’re uncomfortable, it usually shows.

If you feel good, that confidence shines through.

Dress for the Location

A beach session, a studio session, and a session at Goose Creek State Park all have a different feel.

When deciding what to wear for family photos, think about the setting and season.

For outdoor sessions, earthy tones and natural textures blend beautifully with the landscape.

For studio sessions, soft neutrals create a clean, cozy look that keeps the attention on your family.

During cooler months, layered knits and textured fabrics add warmth and depth.

For summer sessions, lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen help everyone stay comfortable while still looking polished.

What Should Kids Wear for Family Photos?

The short answer?

Whatever they’re comfortable in.

A child who’s comfortable is much more likely to have fun during the session than one who is tugging at itchy clothes or uncomfortable shoes.

I love simple dresses, knit rompers, overalls, bloomers, and classic pieces that allow little ones to move freely.

And whenever possible, keep shoes simple or skip them altogether.

Bare feet are almost always a win in my book.

Don’t Forget About the Client Closet

If figuring out what to wear for family photos still feels overwhelming, I’ve got good news.

My client closet is available to all JCP families at no additional cost.

It includes carefully selected dresses in sizes Small through XXXL, many of which are bump-friendly for expecting mothers. I also provide dress clips to help create the perfect fit.

Once you book your session, you’ll receive my Client Closet Guide so you can browse options and find something you love.

A Few Final Tips

Keep hair and makeup soft and natural.

Choose jewelry that feels like you.

Leave bright neon colors and large logos at home.

And if you’re stuck between two outfits, send me a photo.

Seriously.

I love helping families put everything together.

At the end of the day, the best outfit is the one that helps you feel comfortable, confident, and ready to focus on the people you love most.

Because years from now, you probably won’t remember exactly what everyone wore.

You’ll remember how it felt to hold those little hands, chase those giggles, and spend an evening simply being together.

And that’s what matters most.

Let’s make magic together! 💛

ABOUT Jess

That longing to hold onto everyday magic is what led me to photography. I’m drawn to the little things that often go unnoticed—the way excitement shows up in a child’s eyes, the comfort of being close, the feeling of togetherness that turns ordinary days into meaningful memories. When I’m not photographing families, you’ll find me thrifting for treasures, reading a good book, embroidering something by hand, soaking up beach days, or heading off on small adventures with the people I love most.

I approach each session with care and intention, focusing on connection rather than perfection. My goal is to create images that feel honest, warm, and deeply personal—photographs that allow you to return to this season again and again, remembering not just what it looked like, but how it felt.

Rooted in motherhood and shaped by my own journey into parenthood, I’m endlessly inspired by the quiet beauty of family life. I love slow mornings at home with my family—the kind filled with soft light, small rituals, and the tiny moments that send my daughter into fits of belly laughter. Those are the moments I wish I could freeze in time, the ones that remind me how fleeting and beautiful this season truly is.
