As a parenthood photographer in Eastern NC, one of the most common things I hear before a session is, “I just hope we can get one good photo where everyone is smiling.”
And honestly? I get it.
We all want that classic family photo. The one where everyone is looking at the camera, nobody is blinking, and the kids are cooperating for at least a few seconds. Those photos absolutely matter. They’re the ones that end up on holiday cards, framed on the wall, and shared with grandparents.
But can I tell you a little secret?
The photos families think they want before a session are rarely the ones they end up loving the most.
Don’t get me wrong. We’re going to get the smiling photo.
But the images that make my heart do a little happy dance usually happen right after.
Maybe it’s your toddler proudly showing me the stick, flower, or random treasure they found along the way.
Sometimes it’s the burst of laughter after Dad tells a ridiculous joke.
Other times it’s your baby reaching for your necklace while you’re holding them close.
I love noticing tiny hands wrapped around a finger, a spontaneous hug nobody planned, or the way a child lights up when they’re completely convinced their parents are the funniest people in the world.
